TEMPIO MAGGIORE DI ROMA
A remarkable synagogue with a Jewish museum in Rome.
On the banks of the Tiber, overlooking the old ghetto closed in 1870 after the capture of Rome, the great synagogue was built between 1901 and 1904 according to the plans of Vincenzo Costa and Osvaldo Armanni. At the request of the Jewish community of Rome and due to the lack of ancient models to follow, the architects opted for an eclectic style in order to create a unique and easily identifiable temple: its aluminum dome on a square base can be seen from anywhere in Rome. The building can be visited from the Jewish Museum.
