CHIESA SANTA MARIA DELLA VITTORIA
Church in Rome, in honor of the victory of the Catholics in the battle of the White Mountain.
Entrusted to Maderno in 1608, the construction of the church lasted until 1626. Scipione Borghese financed it, wishing to build a church paying tribute to the victory of the Catholics during the Battle of the White Mountain during the Thirty Years' War. The façade, which was last built, is very flat, close to the standards of the Counter-Reformation. The interior, on the other hand, is of an exuberance that heralds the future baroque of Spain or Central Europe. The trompe-l'oeil paintings, the marbles, the gilding are far from Borromini's sobriety, which we will nevertheless find again soon.
Saint Theresa in ecstasy. The Cornaro chapel, on the left in the transept, is of the Bernini, and dates from 1650, and houses the very famous statue of Saint Theresa in ecstasy inspired by the writings of the saint herself, who describes the angel and her javelin: "The pain was so great that it wrung moans from me, but the sweetness that accompanied it was so great that I would not have wanted it to stop. "All the virtuosity of the sculptor explodes in this surprisingly sensual work. Bernin had a window drilled above his work to provide lighting. A splendid result. The chapel seems to take the form of a small theatre and it should even be noted that some members of the Cornaro family were represented on the side walls, in a kind of small balcony, as if they were coming to attend a show. An essential sculpture.
