BASILICA DI SANTA FRANCESCA ROMANA
Ninth century church with the tomb of Gregory XI in the middle of the ruins of the Forum in Rome.
Next to the basilica of Maxentius and Constantine, this curious 9th century church stands in the middle of the ruins of the Forum. It contains the tomb of Gregory XI, the last French pope. Built in the 11th century on the back of the ruins of the temple of Venus and Rome (130 AD), the former convent annex now houses the Antiquarium Forense, a small museum gathering the remains of the Forum, open momentarily, depending on the exhibitions in progress.
