CHIESA DELLA TRINITÀ DEI MONTI
A church housing the monastic community of the Jerusalem Brotherhood in Rome.
Before going down the famous staircase of the Trinités-des-Monts, take the time to enter the church of the same name located at the top. It is a French church, wanted by Charles VIII, started under Louis XII in 1502 and consecrated in 1595. Today it houses the monastic community of the Brotherhood of Jerusalem. The facade, designed by Maderno, is topped by two singular bell towers, apparently by Giacomo della Porta. Inside, the most important work is the Deposition from the Cross, a fresco by Daniele da Volterra, considered a reference in Mannerist painting and made after a drawing by Michelangelo (second chapel on the left).
On request, the cloister and all the conventual buildings are also open. To reserve a place, simply send an e-mail the day before the visit at the latest. Guided tours in French take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9 am and last 1h30. It is a real discovery little known to the general public, to admire the church, the cloister, the refectory painted by Andrea Pozzo and the chapel Mater Admirabilis, decorated with woodwork and ex-voto. We also discover an astrolabe and the crossing of the corridor allows us to admire the astonishing anamorphoses , painted on frescoes in the 17th century by the Minims, an order with a scientific vocation. They are mysterious drawings voluntarily deformed where we decipher several subjects, visible according to the different fields of vision.
