Climbing Michelangelo's dome allows you to better appreciate many architectural elements that, from the ground, sometimes seem abstract, such as the mosaic technique that covers the main dome, the ornamental paving of the aisles of the basilica as well as its roofs, where you can see the lanterns of the domes of the side aisles and the chapels of Michelangelo's promenium. Not to mention a 360° panorama of the Vatican City, where you can see the State Governorate, the gardens, the museums, the Apostolic Palace and the Administrative City, St. Peter's Square and Rome as a whole. A sumptuous view that you can enjoy at any time of the day.
After the elevator ride up, the most difficult part is to discover the stairs (320 steps) whose degrees shift as you go up between the dome and the dome, in a rather narrow gap. If you go up on foot, count 551 steps to reach the top! Once at the top, a well-deserved break in front of the panorama is appreciated! Going down, you can go to the back of the Maderno's facade and see St. Peter's square from another angle, at the level of the statues of the twelve apostles. A small practical detail: on the roof there is a fountain that is free to use. Take advantage of it to fill your bottles! The elevator and the exit staircase lead directly into the basilica, where you enter through the door under the funeral monument of Maria Christina Sobieski.
