MAUSOLEUM OF AUGUST
An impressive circular tomb, rich in history, in Rome.
Following his victorious conquests in Egypt, Augustus, absolute master of Rome, had this vast circular tomb built in 28 BC, modelled on Etruscan tombs. The original monument was 85 m in diameter, topped by an embankment planted with cypress trees. A statue of the emperor stood at the top. The two obelisks that framed the entrance to the monument have now been moved to Piazza del Quirinale and behind the church of Santa Maria Maggiore. The well-designed website features an animated fresco of the mausoleum's history.
