SEPOLCRO DEGLI SCIPIONI
The tomb of the Scipios provides many indications of life in the Republican period.
The tomb of the Scipions, of the Cornelia people, a great patrician family, was outside the city during the time of Republican Rome. In the 3rd century AD, Emperor Aurelian built new ramparts and the tomb of the Scipions was strangely located inside the pomerium, the interior of the city! It should be noted that the Romans buried the dead outside the ramparts until the fall of the Empire. These underground tombs provide many indications of life in the Republican era. Many sarcophagi can be seen there.
