FORO DI AUGUSTO
Imperial forum with a temple dedicated to Mars Avenger in Rome.
Built by Augustus in 31 to enlarge the space of the Roman and Caesar's forums, the Forum of Augustus follows the plan of Caesar's forum. A large central temple, here dedicated to Mars Ultor, surrounded by a courtyard of buildings lined with columned porticoes. Inside, Caesar's sword was kept as a relic, while a colossal statue of Augustus stood at the end of the north portico. Courts, shops and fountains surrounded the area. Behind it, bounded by a brick wall, lay the Suburra district, of dubious repute.
