MAMERTINO CARCASS
An old prison, where St. Peter and St. Paul would have been incarcerated, in Rome.
Today, there are only two cells left in these prisons, which were originally a huge cistern dug at the foot of the Capitol. In ancient times, the Tullianum consisted of two layers of caves, the deepest dating back to the Archaic period and the second to the Republican period. When Rome acquired an aqueduct, this place became a dungeon where Vercingetorix and others were locked up before their execution. According to tradition, Saint Peter and Saint Paul were also imprisoned there and they sprang a spring to baptize their jailers.
