VILLA DI MASSENZIO
Imperial villa containing a palace, a stadium and a mausoleum in Rome.
This architectural unit on via Appia Antica comprises three elements: the palace, the circus of Maxentius and the mausoleum. Maxentius, defeated by Constantine I at the battle of Ponte Milvio in 312, was emperor between 306 and 312 AD. The villa in question is his domus privata. It comprised a palace set high above a (private!) stadium that could seat up to 10,000 spectators... Inside the residence, Maxentius had also built a mausoleum dedicated to his son Romulus, who died very young.
