TEATRO DI MARCELLO
The theater of Marcellus is one of the most important Roman theaters, dedicated to the son-in-law of the emperor Augustus.
We go down the Capitol staircase, and, on the left, stands the most important of the Roman theatres dedicated to the son-in-law of Emperor Augustus. It dates back to the end of the 1st century BC and could hold more than 15,000 spectators. It was fortified in the Middle Ages, then transformed into a palace by the Orsini in the 16th century. Of the ancient construction, only two floors remain, visible under the palace and, just next to it, three magnificent white marble columns, remains of a temple dedicated to Apollo. Located in the heart of the city, a surprising and poetic site.
