OBELISCO DELLA MINERVA
One of the Egyptian obelisks transported to Rome during the Empire.
It is one of the Egyptian obelisks transported to Rome during the Empire. It was erected again in 1667, by order of Pope Alexander VII Chigi. The elephant was designed by Bernini and sculpted by Ercole Ferata. At first, the elephant was not well recognized, so much so that the animal was nicknamed "the little pig of Minerva"! Its symbol is not clear, it could be an illustration of a 17th century novel, theHypnerotomachia Poliphili . Note the epitaph on the pedestal: "It takes a strong head to support a solid intelligence".
