COLONNA DI MARCO AURELIO
Column with remarkable bas-reliefs and a statue of Saint Paul in Rome.
The Antonine Column was erected in 180 AD following the death of the great Marcus Aurelius, to celebrate his victories over the Barbarians. The column is engraved with bas-reliefs that tell the story of the battles successfully won by the Roman army and the emperor Marcus Aurelius against the Sarmatians and other peoples. At the top there was a statue of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, until Pope Sixtus V replaced it with one of St. Paul. The seat of the Italian Parliament, the Palazzo Chigi, borders the square of the same name (piazza Colonna) on the north side.
