PALAZZO LATERANENSE
The second floor of the Lateran Palace houses the Vatican Historical Museum.
Right next to the Basilica of San Giovanni stands this imposing edifice, now open to visitors. It was the palace of the popes for over a thousand years, before it was devastated during their residence in Avignon. On their return, the popes moved to the Vatican. The guided tour of the Palazzo Lateranense takes in 10 rooms and a private apartment. It includes the sala dei pontefici, with portraits of nineteen pontiffs, also known as the room of the Lateran Accords, stipulated here on February 11, 1929.
