MAXXI
Museum offering a beautiful collection of contemporary art in Rome.
Designed by Anglo-Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid, a celebrated figure of deconstructivism who passed away in 2016, the MAXXI (for Musée des arts du XXIesiècle ) features a revolutionary museography. The museum follows an ambitious project: to make the two disciplines of architecture and art interact and resonate with each other. It is the first of its kind in Italy. A total of 21,000m2 is dedicated to a collection of contemporary art, featuring works by leading Italian artists (Stefano Arienti, Lara Favaretto, Domenico Gnoli) and international names (Andy Warhol, Gerhard Richter, Nan Goldin, Gilbert and George). The 400 works showcase the work of contemporary artists, highlighted by artistic productions that are already recognized the world over. Valuable documents on the world of architecture are also on display: letters, photographs, models and sculptures are sure to delight enthusiasts of the genre. Temporary exhibitions feature world-renowned artists as well as young MAXXI prize-winners. An extensive archive on architecture is available to all, by simple reservation. In this museum, Zaha Hadid's design for volume and circulation is complemented by an avant-garde museography that combines raw concrete with glass to let in natural light. A visit not to be missed, for both the collections and the building.
