MERCATI DI TRAIANO - MUSEO DEI FORI IMPERIALI
An ancient covered shopping mall, the first and largest in ancient Rome.
The curved facade of this building follows the shape of the hill and serves as a backdrop to the forum itself, which stood at its feet. One could define these markets as the great commercial center of ancient Rome. It would be the first covered shopping center, with no less than 150 "stores"! An imposing and immense architecture which gathered on the first floor the warehouses. Then, on thefirst floor, protected by the sun, were the stores selling perishable goods, on thesecond floor the goldsmiths, jewelers and cloth merchants, while thethird and last floor housed the administrative offices. This impressive complex, very well preserved and reconstructed, now houses the Museum of the Imperial Forums, where the remains found in the various forums (statues, capitals, columns, bas-reliefs...) are exhibited. We start with the "Great Hall" which is dedicated to the Imperial Forums, then on the upper floor we find the remains extracted from the Forum of Caesar and the Temple of Mars Avenger in the Forum of Augustus before seeing other important discoveries made in the latter. All these remains are highlighted in a neutral scenography that fits perfectly with the place. Leaving the market, you follow the Forum of Augustus, passing in front of the House of the Knights of Rhodes and the Pantani Arch, through which the inhabitants of the working-class district of Suburre used to access the market. A real trip back in time!
