MUSEO DELL'ARA PACIS
Visit the Ara Pacis Museum and admire interesting temporary exhibitions that take place throughout the year.
In the Ara Pacis museum, you will admire mainly this huge sculpted altar that celebrates the return of peace and the supremacy of Rome over the world. Built in 13 BC in honor of the emperor Augustus, this altar was originally located near the piazza San Lorenzo in Lucina, it formed with the mausoleum of Augustus and the obelisk located today in front of the Italian Parliament (piazza Montecitorio) a unique ensemble. In the sixteenth century, excavations in the garden of Palazzo Almagià, to the left of the church of San Lorenzo in Lucina, found traces of it, lost for centuries, but it was not until 1937 that Mussolini decided on its current location along the Tiber. In 2006, the architect Richard Meier designed the current glass structure, very modern, which preserves and presents the Ara Pacis as in a case.
On the main face of the altar, one can recognize the lupercalia, the story of the twins found by the she-wolf, and Aeneas sacrificing the Penates. On the back side, a personification of the Earth among the Water and the Air, as well as the goddess Rome sitting on weapons. The most interesting part is on the right side, where figures of the imperial family of Augustus are represented. From the left you can recognize Agrippa, Caius Caesar (son of the emperor), Livia (his wife).
The Ara Pacis museum also offers, on the first floor, interesting exhibitions throughout the year. Consult the program on the website.
