MUSEO PIO CRISTIANO
Museum dedicated to the Christian antiquities of the first centuries in Rome.
The Pio-Christian Museum was housed in the Lateran Palace and its collections came to the Vatican in 1963. It exhibits Christian antiquities from the first centuries, mainly sarcophagi, i.e. paleochristian art. Many of them come from the Roman catacombs, which were excavated as early as 1854 under the direction of a commission created by the pontiff, but which were disrupted with the end of the pontifical reign over his states in 1871. Among the sarcophagi are pieces from the fourth century that come from the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls.
