Mount Caelius, one of the seven hills of Rome, extends south-east of the Coliseum towards St. John de Lateran. In Roman times, it was occupied by practitioners areas and military buildings. In the time of the primitive Church, he kept this function close to the residence of the popes, who was in the nearby Lateran. Devastated by Robert Guiscard's Norman Normands in the th century and then neglected along with the Lateran during and after Avignon to the Vatican, the Celio remained a quasi-ancestral area within the walls. The urban expansion of the Risorgimento of the Risorgimento was surprisingly low. Celio has vast gardens, convents and hospitals. During the summer, Villa Celimontana, one of the most popular parks in the Romans, hosts a great jazz festival and an outdoor cinema.
