VICUS CAPRARIUS - LA CITTÀ DELL'ACQUA
An archaeological area in Rome, where you can visit an archaeological stratification and discover various excavations.
Between 1999 and 2001, during restoration work on an old cinema, excavations were carried out just a stone's throw from Rome's most famous fountain. It was then that this fascinating archaeological area, Vicus Caprarius - la città dell'acqua, was discovered, at a depth of 9m. A visit to this area highlights the complex archaeological stratification that lies beneath the Rione Trevi, and therefore beneath your feet when you visit the center of Rome! This unique site was home to an insula, a group of Roman dwellings built just after the great fire of 64, and a wealthy domus in the mid-4th century. In the 2nd century, a water reservoir was also built here, earning it the name città dell'acqua (city of water). This cistern was used to store water from the Acqua Virgo, an incredible aqueduct designed by Agrippa and inaugurated in 19, which today is the only one in ancient Rome still in operation. It feeds numerous fountains, including the famous Trevi Fountain. The tour of this archaeological area is enriched by objects found during various excavations, such as amphorae, fragments of marble statues and a few ancient coins from the treasure trove of a former slave. The tour is interesting, but could do with more documentation. We therefore advise you to take the audioguide, which is very useful, or to join a guided tour.
