AREA SACRA DI LARGO ARGENTINA
The sacred area of Largo Argentina in Rome, where you can admire remains, statues and discover its history.
For decades, Romans and tourists had to be content with admiring the remains of the sacred area of Largo Argentina from the top of the street. Since June 2023, however, the archaeological site has been accessible via a footbridge.
It was between 1926 and 1929 that restructuring work in the district brought to light this vast square containing four temples, named A, B, C and D, in the absence of certain identification of the deities to whom they were dedicated - probably Feronie, Juturne, Fortune huiusce diei (Fortune of the present day), and the Nymphs or Lares Permarini. These temples were built in the 3rd and 2nd centuries B.C. It was here, between temple B and temple C, that Julius Caesar is said to have been assassinated in 44 B.C. After the great fire of 80, a travertine pavement, still visible today, was laid. In the5th century, the area probably housed a monastic complex, followed by aristocratic residences in the 8th and 9th centuries. The tour also takes in two small exhibition rooms featuring relics such as two colossal heads of statues that venerated the deities of the sacred area. Panels illustrating the transformations that have taken place over the centuries have been set up along the way. It's also worth noting that the Largo Argentina area was long colonized by the local cats, who you'll still come across today, basking in the sun in the Roman ruins!
