DOMUS AUREA
Remains of a splendid imperial residence in Rome.
Nero's great work of art, imagined after the great fire of 64 AD, expresses all the excesses of a megalomaniac emperor. The residence was colossal, almost 300 m in length, surrounded by a park of over 80 ha and a lake later occupied by the Colosseum. In 104, the Domus Aurea was completely destroyed by another fire. Trajan's baths were built over it, and many of their remains can still be seen. In the 15thcentury , part of the Domus Aurea was rediscovered and visited by artists who, fascinated by the elegantly decorative ancient frescoes, took up the decorative motifs. The grotesque style was born. A few vestiges remain of this splendid residence: painted wall sections, a nymph, but above all the room where Nero held his banquets and which was described by Petronius in his novel Satyricon.
Using state-of-the-art multimedia techniques such as video mapping and virtual reality, the tour immerses visitors in the Domus Aurea as it may have been in Nero's time. It's a great way to discover the site, its history and the various restoration projects that have been carried out. The interesting guided tour is currently only available in English and Italian. It is also possible to visit the Domus Aurea without a guide at 1pm and 5pm. Online booking is strongly recommended.

The ratings and reviews below reflect the subjective opinions of members and not the opinion of The Little Witty.
