From the airport to the city centre Rome
From Ciampino, there are several possibilities:
By public transport: bus 520 takes you to the Cinecittà metro stop (line A) or bus 720 to Laurentina (line B). Please note: you can't buy tickets on the bus, but you can pay with a contactless bank card in most cases (Tap&go). Otherwise, a kiosk at the airport sells tickets. Cotral buses(https://www.cotralspa.it/) also run to the Anagnina metro stop (line A).
Thereare several shuttle companies to Termini station. Among them is Terravision(https://www.terravision.eu/): departures every 45 minutes, between 8:15 a.m. and 10:30 p.m. and between 4:40 a.m. and 6:55 p.m. from Termini station to the airport (€6 online, €11 return). Another company is Sitbus Shuttle(www.sitbusshuttle.com). A connection called Ciampino Airlink also allows you to travel by bus to Ciampino station and then by train to Termini station in Rome for €2.70. Book on the Trenitalia website(www.trenitalia.it).
Finally, cabs will take you to your chosen address (within the city walls) for a flat rate of €31.
From Fiumicino :
Shuttle buses. Fiumicino airport is also served by Terravision:(https://www.terravision.eu/). From the airport to Termini: a bus approximately every 30/45 minutes, between 8:00 and 00:30. From Termini to the airport: from 4 a.m. to 7:50 p.m. (€6 online, €11 return). Other company: Sitbus Shuttle(www.sitbusshuttle.com) Please note: the company TAM (https://www.tambus.it/) provides 24-hour connections between Fiumicino airport and Termini, useful if you need to get to the airport very early in the morning (€6 online, €11 return).
The train is also a good way to get to Fiumicino. The regional train to Roma Trastevere (27 minutes), Roma Ostiense (31 minutes), Roma Tuscolana (40 minutes) and Roma Tiburtina (48 minutes) stations costs €8. The Leonardo Express goes directly to Termini in 32 minutes for €14. Timetables for these two trains are available on the Trenitalia website(www.trenitalia.it). The last Leonardo Express leaves the airport at 23:53, and the last regional train, to Roma Ostiense, at 23:27. Don't forget to stamp your ticket before boarding the train (if you buy your ticket online, you'll need to check-in from the e-mail you received).
Cabs will take you to your chosen address for a flat rate of €50 (within the city walls).
Arrival by train Rome
There are no direct lines to Rome from France or Switzerland. A connection in Milan or Turin is then necessary, and the journey is even more complicated since the landslide in August 2023 on the high-speed line between France and Italy. The national railway company is Trenitalia(www.trenitalia.it). To get to Rome from Milan or Turin, the private company Italo(www.italo.it) is often more economical. You can also take a train to Nice, then another to Ventimiglia, on the Italian border, and finally various regional trains to Rome. This is a much longer journey. In any case, to reach Rome by train from Paris, you'll need to allow at least 11 hours for the journey.
The two main stations in Rome are Termini, in the center of the city, and Tiburtina, in the northeast.
Public transport Rome
Rome's public transport company is ATAC. Rome currently has three metro lines (A, B and C). For the two main lines (A and B), the only junction is Termini station. To take the C line (convenient for the Pigneto district, for example), there's just one junction with the A line at San Giovanni station. The metro runs between 5.30 a.m. and 11.30 p.m. (1.30 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays). Buses run from 5.30 a.m. to around midnight. For the rest of the night, nocturnal lines bearing the letter "N" cross the main thoroughfares. These are mostly efficient in the center, but often crowded. The six streetcar lines have the same timetable as the buses.
Fares: €1.50 for 1 trip (at the time of updating this guide, but ticket prices may rise in coming months). Valid for 100 minutes. 24-hour pass: €7, 48-hour pass: €12.50, 72-hour pass: €18 and 7-day pass: €24. Tickets can be purchased at kiosks in metro stations, newsagents and tobacconists. Rechargeable cards cost €0.50. It is also possible to pay directly with a contactless bank card at metro gates or on buses and streetcars equipped with Tap & Go terminals.
Bike, scooters & co Rome
The leading rental company for scooters and electric bikes is Lime (https://www.li.me/). Simply download one of the apps and geolocate the scooter or bike nearest you. Beware: there are very few cycle paths in Rome, so getting around by bike or scooter can sometimes be perilous.
The Romanmeans of transport par excellence remains the scooter(motorino). Renting electric scooters, via the Cooltra app (https://cooltra.com/) in particular, is very practical and makes getting around Rome easy.
With a driver Rome
The official cab cars are white and equipped with a meter. Each journey costs €3 on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., €5 on Sundays from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and €7 at night. Thereafter: between €1.14 and €1.66 per km. The first piece of luggage is free, from the second add €1. The "Chiama Taxi" and "Free Now" applications can be used to quickly find the nearest cab. Alternatively, call 06 06 09.
By car Rome
The car is not the most suitable means of transport in Rome. Especially as much of the city center is inaccessible without authorization: this is the ZTL (Zona a Traffico Limitato). When it comes to parking, it's the same as everywhere else: few free spaces.
For short trips, however, car-sharing services are very useful and frequently used by Romans. There are two main mobile applications: Enjoy(https://enjoy.eni.com/it ) and Car2go(https://www.car2go.com).
Accessibility Rome
Unfortunately, there is still work to be done for people with reduced mobility on public transport in Rome: not all metro stations have elevators and it is not uncommon for escalators to be out of order. The same applies to travelers with strollers.
Tourist traps Rome
Official cabs are white. They must charge the fare according to the city-imposed rates displayed on the car door, and an odometer must be visible on the dashboard. Cab drivers are also required to give you the option of paying by credit card.
