CASTELLO DI GIULIO II
Castle with frescoes by Baldassare Peruzzi in the medieval village of Ostia Antica.
Before exploring the ancient ruins of Ostia Antica, take a tour of the Castello della Rovere in the medieval village. Built by Pope Julius II in 1483 while he was still Cardinal of Ostia, you may be lucky enough to see the frescoes by Baldassare Peruzzi, Michelangelo's pupil. A unique example of Renaissance military architecture, the fortress has a triangular plan that served to control river traffic on the Tiber between the coast and Rome. A visit that completes the discovery of Ostia Antica.
