BANDITACCIA NECROPOLI
The largest ancient necropolis in the Mediterranean area in Cerveteri.
The necropolis of Banditaccia covers an area of 400 ha, of which 10 ha can be visited, for a total of 1,000 tombs. It is the largest ancient necropolis in the Mediterranean area and its visit is a must for all history buffs! The tombs are dated from the Villanova culture of the 9th century BC to the late Etruscan period of the 3rd century BC. The oldest ones are in the form of a well, in which the ashes of the dead were placed. There are also simple niches and mounds visible upon arrival on the site. The tombs are organized on the model of a city map, with streets, small squares and districts, many of them with bas-reliefs, others with beautiful wall paintings. It is a unique testimony to the urban civilization of the Etruscan era. Archaeologists believe that this city of the dead follows the same urban patterns as the cities of the living, of which there is nothing left. One of the most famous, from the 7th century BC, is the tomb of the hut, which reproduces all the architectural elements of a real building. This tomb, along with others that imitate houses (tomb of the Greek Vases), are the best evidence of Etruscan domestic architecture. Many of the remains found there are now in the Villa Giulia Museum in Rome. The necropolis was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2004.
