NECROPOLI ETRUSCA DI MONTEROZZI
Necropolis with tombs containing extraordinary pictorial treasures in Tarquinia.
Tarquinia's reputation is based on its buried tombs, of which about 600 have been uncovered and can be visited today. Dating ranges from the sixth to the first century B.C. These tombs contain extraordinary pictorial treasures, testifying to the artistic level reached by the Etruscans and their daily life. Many researchers consider that these masterpieces form the first chapter of the history of Italian painting (which will be, as we know, quite rich!). Unlike the necropolis of Cerveteri, in Tarquinia the tombs are buried and not surmounted by tumuli. There is therefore nothing to be seen a priori. You have to go down underground and walk through narrow corridors to discover the painted tombs which are conceived as small rooms: for some of them, the colors are hardly faded, offering to the visitors a colored fresco to decipher. Among the most famous tombs: those of the Bulls, the Lionesses, the Hunting and Fishing or the Leopards. All of them represent scenes of daily life in the Etruscan period: hunting, fishing, dancing, etc. During the first half of the 19th century, the necropolis of Tarquinia fascinated the Europeans, and for good reason, most of the tombs known today were discovered at that time. In 1834, Ludwig I of Bavaria also became fascinated with the site and ordered the reproduction of the paintings for the Alte Pinakothek in Munich.
