ROCCA PIA
The Rocca Pia is a fortress located a few steps from Piazza Garibaldi, south of the city, near the ruins of the Roman amphitheater.
A few steps from Garibaldi Square, to the south of the city, near the ruins of the Roman amphitheatre, Pope Pius II had this fortress built in the 15th century, but it was only completed by its successors. The four huge cylindrical towers are not all of the same height, the highest culminates at 36 m. They were located at each corner of the building and soon made it the predominant element in the city's defence. It is therefore quite naturally that Rocca Pia was used as a prison from the 19th century until 1960.
