ABBAZIA DI MONTE CASSINO
An eleventh-century abbey on Monte Cassino, built on the initiative of the Benedictines
On Monte Cassino is the abbey founded by St. Benedict in the early sixth century, the origin of the Benedictine order. It was completely rebuilt on the plans of the old architectural model after the bombings of 1944. However, its current architecture has little to do with the original style. Its bronze portal (11th century) is one of the few pieces dating from before the 16th century, while the dominant style is Baroque. The abbey's collections include valuable works of art from this period.
