ELLIOTT KEY
Large island in Biscayne National Park used as a refuge for pirates and slaves according to legend, featuring a 1.6 km loop
A path starts from the campground (on the Biscayne Bay side) and goes around the island (the length is more than 11 km); it allows you to cross the island from north to south. For a quicker option, opt for the 1.6 km loop that also leaves from the campground. Elliot Key is the largest island in the park; legend has it that it was a refuge for pirates and escaped slaves. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, the island was inhabited and had pineapple plantations, the harvest of which produced over 50,000 fruits.
