THE OLDEST HOUSE
Gonzales-Alvarez historical house founded by Gonzales Hernandes in 1565, the oldest in Saint Augustine and now a museum
The Gonzales-Alvarez house is the oldest in the city. Founded by Gonzales Hernandes in 1565, it was attacked by battles, burned in 1702 and saw its inhabitants die in 1727. forty years later, the English took over the city and the house. The years passed and one of the owners decided to sell it, in 1790, to a Spaniard, el Señor Alvarez. His family lived there for a hundred years, and then others took over from 1882. The city acquired this historic house in 1918 to transform it into a museum.
