FORT MATANZAS NATIONAL MONUMENT
This fort, located 15 miles south of the city, was used to observe movements south of the city
Located 15 miles south of the city, the fort was originally a wooden tower surrounded by palisades that allowed observation of movements south of the city. In 1740, after a siege by General James Edward Ogelthorpe, work began to rebuild it in stone. It took about two years to complete the work. The fort was used by the city's Spanish, English and Spanish masters when they returned in 1784. When the territory of Florida became American in 1821, the army chose to abandon the fort.
