CASTILLO DE SAN MARCOS
An imposing palm-fringed monument and its grounds cover 10 hectares in the city center, north of the Bridge of Lions
This imposing palm-fringed monument and its grounds cover 10 hectares in the city center, north of the Bridge of Lions. This fortress dates from 1695 and was never taken by force. The entrance is via a drawbridge. The complex was built in coquina (limestone) by the Spanish. You can visit the fort on your own or follow a tour with a guide in period costume, from the guard to the cook. Don't miss to go and have a look at the latrines of the time... This is the kind of monument you don't expect to see in the USA!
