LES NATURALISTES
The best way to hike safely in Mayotte is in a group. Since May 2024, the national gendarmerie, by order of the prefect, has been offering certain outings to be carried out on their Facebook page "gendarmerie 976". But this is also the credo of the association Les Naturalistes de Mayotte, which was set up in 1999 and has been offering guided outings all over the island at regular intervals for much longer. Above and beyond safety, the organizers are first and foremost goldmines of information for learning more about the island, its flora and fauna, but also about social issues and local life, with some great encounters. The program of outings is available on their Facebook page at the beginning of each month. Volunteers take you along trails they know like the back of their hand, adding information on the fauna, flora, geology and history of Mayotte. Among the hikes we've tested for you: the beautiful crests of Bandrélé, Saziley Point and its sumptuous baobabs and the unmissable Mont Choungui. It's worth noting that Les Naturalistes now offers sea or snorkeling outings, and organizes outings to the Mbouzi islet, which is a nature reserve. The islet is open to the public all year round, and since September 2023 has been equipped with a new educational trail. Last but not least, the association regularly organizes cafés and meetings on environmental issues, particularly the preservation of local species.
