TOUR OF NATURAL LAKE KARIHANI
Starting point: leaving Tsingoni on the RN1 towards Combani, you will see the Hachénoua soccer stadium. The trail starts about 400 m further on, on the right, on a dirt track. A freshwater lake on an island where the lagoon is king is hard to resist! So, yes, this freshwater reservoir (one of the few on the island!) doesn't come in dazzling, enchanting colors, but it is home to an abundance of flora and fauna. It's the largest natural lake on Grande-Terre, but much smaller than the one on Petite-Terre. In the dry season, it is three times smaller than in the rainy season. Birdwatchers can test their skills by observing the many birds that nest in these porous fields, some of which live here all year round. This is the garden of egrets, herons and waders, as well as endangered species such as the Madagascar Pond Heron. The lake takes its name from the moorhen, a common sight on the site, which is called Kariha in Shimaore. Budding botanists can admire the diversity of plant species that feed on the water of the lake, which is lined with water lilies. However, this flora and fauna is threatened by agriculture and deforestation on the lake's slopes. A walk recommended during the rainy season, as the lake's surface area shrinks considerably when the heat rises. A wooden shelter allows you to observe the wildlife discreetly.
