Owned by the General Council, the reserve is managed by the association of Naturalists of Mayotte, which regularly conducts clean-up and awareness actions. A rare occurrence for a nature reserve, it has a land part (82 hectares) and a marine part (60 hectares). 27 habitats are listed on the land part and 17 on the marine part. Among the marine species: 191 fish, 25 crustaceans, 161 molluscs, 4 mammals and 25 echinoderms. The reserve even allowed the discovery of two new marine species in 2015. The island would also have welcomed sick people or new arrivals for several years, as the remains of the old leper colony testify. Finally, legend has it that some years ago, a passionate woman decided to make the islet a reserve for makis and brought them here from Grande-Terre. Once there, the population multiplied, in the absence of predators, until it reached 800 individuals, before self-regulating due to a lack of food, and today there are only about a hundred lemurs. The opportunity to meet makis in the wild. Be careful, only naturalists have the authorization to bring you there.
