SALT ECO-MUSEUM
The ANPCBA, originally an association that cleaned the beach of Bandrélé, opened this small salt museum in order to highlight the work of the "mamas shingos". The production of salt from silt is an ancestral activity passed on from one generation to the next, and a stamp issued by the Mayotte Post Office on1 June 2002 pays tribute to this activity. This salt is produced by the women of Bandrélé who are nicknamed the "mamas shingos", which means "salt mamas" in Mauritanian. Unfortunately, there is no longer any significant production, but the income is used to finance the operation of the museum. Good welcome and don't hesitate to buy a packet of salt to taste, its taste is different from the usual salts (no treatment and rinsing here, the salt is heated on a wood fire!), it is recommended by the doctors of the island for the tension. A site that deserves to be highlighted more! Signs have been installed inside the small museum to explain the different phases of salt making: silt harvesting, filtering, water evaporation until the harvest. On site, the Shingo mamas do not always speak French, call Asma at the number indicated for the visit. In October, the commune of Bandrélé organizes each year the salt festival on the football stadium, to pay tribute to the mamas and their precious know-how. On the program: concerts, traditional dances, speeches, theater and tastings of course!
