ASCENT OF MOUNT CHOUNGUI

The departure of the hike is easy to find: from Chirongui follow the road towards the village of Choungui. At the level of the pass, at 300 m of altitude, a big parking lot marks the beginning of the trail, in front of a big water tank. The path is wide and flat at the beginning, it crosses the forest where you can see makis and tangues (as well as a multitude of mosquitoes, cover yourself!); it climbs then more and more strongly; we see the size of the vegetation decreasing gradually. The last 30 minutes of the climb are exhausting and akin to rock climbing (without a safety net!), but the finish is worth it. At the top, one of the most beautiful panoramas of the island is exposed to you: dominating the island and the forest, the view is breathtaking, overlooking the village of Choungui below, the entire bay of Bouéni and the jagged coastline of the south which gives this part of the island its hand shape, as well as the Sazilé point which extends eastward. The lagoon reveals its turquoise lines that we would love to be able to see from the beach, and the islets are cut out on the horizon, reminding you of the immensity of the Ocean. The 2 hours of walking and the steepness of the slope are rewarded. Be careful, if the weather is bad or if it rained the day before, turn back because the red earth of the summit turns into a skating rink and the roots into soapsuds! You can also start from Dapani, in which case it takes an hour and a half, or from the village of Choungui itself.
