SÃO JOSÉ CHURCH
Church built on a small chapel in Ponta Delgada, featuring three naves with frescoed vaults.
Once the church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, or Immaculate Conception, it was an integral part of the Franciscan convent. It was built over a small16th-century chapel in 1709. Of particular interest are the three naves with frescoed vaults, the carved and gilded wooden altars, the azulejos in the sanctuary, the Hispano-Mexican-influenced images from the 17thand 18thcenturies , and the jacaranda furniture in the sacristy. The windows of the adjoining chapel of Nossa Senhora des Dores form a Baroque ensemble.
