REDOUTE MÃE DE DEUS
The place where walls, boulevards and pillboxes were built to watch over the city of Ponta Delgada.
Here, walls, boulevards and casemates stretched out to watch over the town. On January1 , 1944, perhaps having celebrated the New Year a little too much, the servants of the air battery installed in the redoubt inadvertently opened fire on the plane carrying General Eisenhower back to the United States from North Africa. The hermitage of the same name was built in the 19thcentury and is surrounded by a garden. It's a great place to take a stroll, not least for its breathtaking views over the city.
