CITY GATES
The Portes de la Ville, one of the symbols of the capital, built in 1783 near the old quay.
These gates are one of the symbols of the capital. Built in 1783 near the old wharf, they were moved here during the construction of the marginal road. The central arch is topped by the royal crown and, below it, two oval shields, one displaying the city's coat of arms (the arrows and palm leaf of Saint Sebastian), the other the five escutcheons of Portugal's castles. Visiting Portuguese kings have all passed through here, from Dom Pedro IV to Dom Carlos. They are emblematic of Ponta Delgada.
