Fort built by order of Dom João III to defend the island from pirates at Ponta Delgada.
The fort was built by order of Dom João III in 1552 to defend the island against pirates. Today, it houses the headquarters of the Azores Military Zone Command, as well as a large military museum with a particularly extensive collection. In fact, it's a military man in uniform who collects your ticket and greets you. How unusual! Visitors come here to tour the ramparts and discover weapons, artillery and uniforms from every era.
