The longest lava tunnel on the island of São Miguel, which can be visited with a guide wearing a helmet and carrying a flashlight.

Slightly to the west of Ponta Delgada, the Gruta do Carvão is the longest lava tunnel on the island of São Miguel. Although today (only) 1,912 metres are recorded on the map, old documents refer to a much greater length, in excess of 5 km. Divided into three sections (the "Paim" section, the "João do Rego" section and the "Tobacco Dryer" section), it can be visited with a guide who, equipped as you are with a helmet and flashlight, will tell you all about the history and geology of this 5,000 to 12,000-year-old cavity...

Bien à voir si rien d'autre a faire.
