OLD CITY
A fine example of and century civil architecture, it houses a collection of portraits of heads of state.
Around the public garden, where one will enjoy linger to contemplate the magnificent metrosideros or "velvet trees", one can observe several remarkable buildings: it is difficult not to notice the exuberant facade of the Do Espírito Santo church, an ancient temple of the Brotherhood of Mercy. The interior is in contrast very sober. The Town Hall is a fine example of 17th and 18th century civil architecture. It contains a collection of portraits of Heads of State, from Dona Maria II to the present day.
