Church featuring three naves, a frontispiece decorated with the cross of Christ, a basalt belfry and an ogival doorway.
Built in the 15thcentury by Rui Gonçalves da Câmara, the island's third captain-donor, it was completely destroyed by the earthquake of 1522 and immediately rebuilt to the same design. It features three naves, a frontispiece decorated with the cross of Christ, a basalt belfry and a Gothic-style ogival door. The interior features a superb high altar in gilded and carved wood, covered with azulejos on the pendentives.
