Built on a mountainside, it overlooks the entire Vila Franca de Campo region below. Its double staircase decorated with azulejos is reminiscent of the sanctuaries of Lamego or Braga, dominated, it is true, by imposing churches, whereas this is a modest chapel. However, it offers an exceptional view. It was built in the 16th century following, according to legend, the appearance of the Virgin Mary to a shepherd.

Très bel ensemble
L'accès n'est pas facile à trouver mais la très belle vue sur la ville de Vila Franca do Campo et son Ilhéu vaut le détour, et il n'est pas besoin de grimper les quelques 100 marches pour cela. La chapelle ne se visite pas mais les azulejos sont splendides et l'architecture de l'ensemble (chapelle et escaliers) est superbe.

Panorama sur le Ilhéu de Vila Franca
On monte par des ruelles pas toujours faciles à trouver et, une fois arrivés au sommet, on a une vue fabuleuse sur Vila Franca et son îlot.
Il vaut la peine de monter lentement les escaliers jusqu'à l'ermitage, en observant les panneaux de azulejos qui décorent chaque palier.

Belle chapelle qui offre un superbe point de vue sur Vila Franca do Campo et sur la campagne alentour. Attention, la route est assez difficile à trouver même avec un GPS (voir sur google map)
