LAGOA DAS FURNAS
A tour that allows you to observe numerous plant species such as the Venus cattail, yellow, fragrant flowers at Furnas
Just a few minutes from Furnas, the lake is an invitation to laziness and meditation. Coming from the village, the first road on the right leads to a small beach with a refreshment bar and pedal boats, where you can see small fumaroles that are less impressive, but just as fragrant as their big sisters in town. The famous cozido is prepared here, one of the most picturesque meals you'll taste in the Azores. If you'd like to see how it's all done, come around midday on Sundays: it's as enjoyable as it is instructive. And don't be fooled by the fact that this is not just a tradition brought up to date for the sake of tourism: this meal, cooked in volcanic steam, is a real favorite with the locals, who come for Sunday lunch with their families in this magnificent setting. If you'd like to try cozido in one of Furnas' restaurants, which we strongly recommend, you'll need to book at least one day in advance, as preparation time is essential. In summer, Quinta d'Agua offers a wide range of activities, including horseback riding, bicycle rides, cart rides and strolls around the lake. The circuit around the lake (allow 3 hours) allows you to observe, in September, numerous plant species such as the Venus cattail, a fragrant yellow flower. Part of the route follows a magnificent paved road. In the afternoon, you can continue your expedition by climbing Pico da Areia, the caldera 's highest peak: superb views of Furnas and the lake.
