SÃO FILIPE CASTLE
The largest Spanish fortress built abroad, protected by ditches and massive 5 km walls.
Built between the 16th and 17th centuries by Philip II of Spain at the foot of Monte Brasil, it is quite simply the largest Spanish fortress built outside Spain. Its central portal, in black ashlar, is crowned by the royal coat of arms. It is protected by ditches and massive walls 5 km long, with boulevards designed for troop movements. The castle housed the gold and silver cargoes of the galleons bound for Seville. With its 400 cannons aimed at the city, its 1,200 men, its cistern and the support of the São Sebastião fort, it constituted a solid defense. In 1640, however, it failed to withstand Portugal's independence movement. A long siege sapped the morale of the troops (many of whom were married to Portuguese women), and the fortress conceded defeat. The church of São João Baptista was built by King Dom João IV shortly after the victory over the Spaniards. It is thus one of the few places in the world where both Iberian colonial empires left their mark. The walk to get there is superb, and the panorama of the city from up there is simply breathtaking. There's no doubt about it, if you're in Angra do Heroísmo, this is a visit not to be missed under any circumstances (for the fort itself, but also for the walk to get there, so take your time and admire your surroundings as you climb). Highly recommended for smart travellers!
