SAN SEBASTIAN CHURCH
Church featuring a portal and interesting Gothic frescoes, unique in the Azores, with a Manueline-style altar.
The church of Saint-Sébastien dates back to the founding of the village (which received its charter in 1503). Altered until the 16thcentury , it features a portal and interesting Gothic frescoes, unique in the Azores, discovered only in 1930. The altar is in Manueline style, and the sacristy door is pure Baroque. There's also a fine display of folk art, Christ on the Father's left, Roman soldiers in medieval garb and a very Gothic Jerusalem. Make the detour if you're passing through São Sebastião...
