NOSSA SENHORA DA AJUDA HERMITAGE
Chapel built in the century, considered one of the best examples of fortified religious architecture in the archipelago.
Built in the 16th century on a hilltop just outside Santa Cruz, this chapel has been restored many times since its construction, following damage caused by various earthquakes. With its castle-like appearance, it is considered one of the finest examples of fortified religious architecture in the archipelago. Inside, an interesting collection of 18th-century azulejos. Note the adjoining "pilgrims' house".
