It is the most important religious festival on the island of Faial. It refers to the first church built.
Faial's first church dates back to the time of settlement, and was built in honor of Our Lady of Anguish. Her image, brought from Flanders by the island's first captain, Josse van Huerter, was placed in the church. Today, this celebration is quite simply considered Faial's most important religious holiday. The town of Horta, and in particular the parish of Angústias, comes alive with festivities: processions, concerts, balls, regattas...
